New York City: A National Icon

The Empire State Building

Now the tallest landmark in all of New York City, the Empire State Building stands more than 1,000 feet tall.  One of the few buildings that are open to the public past midnight for 365 days a year, it's the perfect spot for a romantic scenic overlook.  One little-known fact about the building is that on a clear day, you can see five different states from the top floor!

Statue of Liberty

Without a doubt, the most recognizable sight in New York City is the Statue of Liberty.  A gift from the French, it stands more than 300 feet tall and is the symbol of liberty and freedom; for many immigrants, it was the first sight they would lay eyes upon when traveling to America.  It spoke of a new beginning, hope and a better life.  Free tours are available on the tiny island, and explain the details of the designer Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi and his wonderful creation. 

Central Park

Measuring at 843 acres, it is located within the heart of Manhattan.  It is a beautiful break from the buildings, concrete and steel of the city life, and you can walk, bike, ice skate, play chess and checkers and even fish.  Make sure to add this to your to-see list!

Times Square

Named for the New York Times originally, it is quite possible the most-recognizable area within the country.  The center of many famous photos, gatherings and celebrations, it is a must-see.  Each year, over a million people gather there to celebrate on New Year's Eve; the Nasdaq sign at Times Square is 37 feet high, which makes it the largest LED sign in the world.  Bring your camera!
